| Rovaniemi Overview |
| The capital of Lapland and is probably the best bet for a base for traveling around the Arctic Area. The original town was burned to the ground by retreating Germans in 1944, the city you see now is based on blue prints drawn up by Alvar Aalto. During the rebuilding of the town the population rose from 8,000 to 34,000 so be prepared for a typical countryside city not a small forgotten village. |

Atktikum - Visiting this Arctic Research Center is undoubtedly one of the best ways to learn about the local Lap lifestyle and culture. The Saame have their story of survival told by the Lapland Provincial Museum which can be found here to.
Joulupukin Pajakyla - Otherwise known as Santa Claus Village this is where, barring the 25th December, the locals claim Santa Claus lives. It is also probably the only place your kids will get to pet a live reindeer as the wild ones are very shy.
Ounasvaara Ski Centre - Located just 3km out of town across the Ounasjoki river is this ski centre. Here you'll find six downhill ski slopes and three ski jumps. During the summer months a tobogganing run is also open.
Arctic Circle Marker - The official Arctic Circle marker better known as the north pole can be found on top of the Santa Claus post office. This post office is lots of fun for all and is also very busy, receiving almost a million letters each year.
Ounasvaaran Pirtit - This riverside restaurant, which is rated as one of Rovaniemi's best, specializes in traditional Finnish and Lapp food. A must try is the sauteed reindeer with mashed potatoes. |
